To Mary, Claire and Tracey and other members of the Neumann family - please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Chris. For members of the family who do not know me - I am David Brittain, like Chris an ex-pupil of Archbishop Holgates Grammer School in Lord Mayors Walk, York, where we both received an excellant grounding Education, which prepared us for our future Career Paths - Chris into Finance and myself into the Aviation Industry. During our working Careers, we were able to keep in touch via the A.B.H.S Old Boys Assoc. Chris was for many years the Hon Secretary and kept us all up to date on life at "Archies" and his excellent regular Newsletters together with his Organisation of the Annual York Dinner and later working with our colleague, Iain Melia in the organisation of the AGM and London Dinner at the RAF Club in Central London. His excellent Admin Skills were well in place in his work in clearing all the ecclesiastical paperwork in order to mastermind the dedication of a special plaque in memory of our Founder, Robert Holgate in St. Sepulcha's Church in London. Together with organising the manufacture of a special Chalice for the present School now in Hull Road. Over the years, we all enjoyed his Company with Mary at both the York and London Dinners and the various After Dinner Speakers he masterminded. Chris, in his private (non-Secretary role) was dedicated to his mentor Captain James Cook and was a renowned expert in the life and times of this great Mariner. A couple of years ago, Chris had the opportunity of sailing across the Pacific, calling at Pitcairn and Easter Island - thus retracing one of Captain Cook's voyages. On the day of his departure, I met him at London Airport, bought him a coffee and doughnut and pointed him and his trolley in the direction of New Zealand. Three months later, I received a phone call from Mary stating that our intrepid "midshipman" was returning from Los Angeles via Heathrow en route to HUSM. I returned to the airport at the alloted hour and captured him in the Arrival Lounge. He had a round well tanned face, a big cheesy grin and wearing a 100 kilowatt bright red and yellow Hawaiin shirt. "Hello Mate" he said. What an adventure he had experienced. This was Chris all over, a devoted Family man, a dedicated Admin and Hon. Sec and, as Noel Coward would have said "A damn fine Chap" who will be sadly missed by us all. For Claire and Tracey: Dad will not be forgotten - just think of his happy grin and his 100 kilowatt shirt. He is now locked in our memories. God Bless. David. W. Brittain.
